Mark chapter 5 records the events in which Jesus set free a man who was held by an unclean spirit, healed a woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years, and raised the dead daughter of Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue. The man who lived among the tombs was in so wretched a state that no one could control him even with chains, but when Jesus cast out the demons named Legion, he was restored to his right mind. Jesus told him to tell his family of the grace he had received, and he made known widely in the region of Decapolis what Jesus had done for him. Then, when Jairus the ruler of the synagogue pleaded with Him to save his dying daughter, Jesus set out for his house. On the way, a woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years touched the garment of Jesus and was healed of her disease. Jesus sought out the woman, declared that her faith had saved her, and told her to go in peace. The news came that Jairus’s daughter had died, but Jesus said, “Do not be afraid; only believe,” and then took the child by the hand and raised her up. This chapter shows the power of Jesus, who has authority even over demons, disease, and death, and His love that has compassion on a person whom no one could restore.
