We are by nature a brood of evildoers, unable to do good by ourselves, and when I think of how God has saved such people as us, I am truly thankful and my heart praises the Lord. Looking at the passage we have read today, the Pharisees all loved hypocrisy. They loved making only the outside clean. Every religion cleanses the shell. If people wash their hands and feet clean, wash their hair clean, and dress in clean clothes, they think they are clean. So the Pharisees, too, thought of themselves as clean people. But is a person clean because his outward appearance is clean? Being clean in outward appearance alone does not make one clean. The Pharisees in this passage professed to believe in God, yet they turned the word of God into the teachings of men and taught the people with them.
